A New Twist

Logan and Grandma Sankey

Hi, everyone. Here's the latest on Logan. The second pathology report from the biopsy revealed a fungal component mixed with the what-had-been infectious material behind and beside his eye. Knowing this and seeing as how the week of steroids he just took didn't help the proptosis/eye bulging, as of today the Infectious Disease doctor has decided to "shift gears" and target the fungus that he apparently has in his ethmoid sinus extending into the orbit of the eye. She has put him on VERY expensive anti-fungal therapy for an indefinite amount of time. He starts that new medicine tomorrow; he is still taking the Vancomycin by PICC line at least until the middle of February. He is to be tested for tuberculosis, have a chest x-ray taken, and more blood drawn to pinpoint the kind of fungus present - all in the next few days.

The good news is that fungus is treatable, even though it is "slow to grow, slow to go". We do know that he has chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps - basically what the ENT called sinus disease. It could be the case that all of this caused the fungus to grow/develop even over a long period of time - we don't know how long.

The proptosis is beginning to cause Logan some pain - more than before. We are really in hopes that treating the fungus will allow the inflammation to recede, thus allowing the eye to fall back into its normal orbit.

But due to how the situation seems to be stabilizing at least for a couple weeks, Marc is planning to keep his commitment to Sea Breeze Camp 2008 in Hobe Sound, Florida as one of the main evangelists and he will be flying out a week from today. Jordan and Cameron are SO excited, because they get to go with him! Logan and I will stay here and "get better" - we hope and pray. We'll definitely be logging on to as many services as we possibly can.

Logan turns 9 a week from tomorrow - he's coming up with his plan to celebrate! Just so it includes being tied to an IV pole every few hours....

Thanks for your prayers for all of us.

Melodie, you are starting to sound like a physician with all your medical terminology! You add your new found medical info with my new found medical info... wa la! We will be doctors by the time it is all over! Hey, really I wanted you to know that I think of you so much! I check your blog often to so how your precious child is doing, and how you all are coping! I feel like I know you really well now, although we've never had the chance to talk much... perhaps because I feel connected because we are both having serious family health problems, and I love missions! Please, try to keep encouraged, and know that people all over are praying for you! Love ya, and thanks for keeping us all so well updated!

Melodie,
Thanks for the update on Logan. I am so sorry he is having pain and I will be praying about this. Glad they are still finding things that are treatable... not that they are finding things but that what they are finding is treatable. We are praying for you!

Melodie, so sorry that you and Logan will not be able to join us here at Hobe Sound for campmeeting. Mark and I wanted to take you guys out to Bono's for some good ribs!! It will be good to see Mark and the boy's. By the way can you share your mailing address? Would like to send Logan a card. Love ya, Tammy Potter

I just was thinking the same thing, that you know WAY more medical terms than you probably ever cared to know. =) We are praying for Logan and that whatever is causing all of this can be found and ZAPPED instantly! Praying for God's grace for y'all too!
Wow! I know that won't be easy to let Marc and your other boys go to Hobe S. by theirselves, but glad you will have Steve and Beth near you and Logan.

Love, Heather

Thanks for the very informative and useful update. I'm hoping this new treatment is going to take care of Log's (long O, of course) problems quickly.

I love you - you are doing so good.

Hi, Tammy. Yes, I'm very disappointed to not be able to come to Hobe Sound this year. Missing ribs at Bono's is just terrible. Our mailing address is listed on the right side of our blog.
Thanks for your comment!

Wow, I can't believe what an ordeal this has turned out to be for your little guy. I'm sure he's sick of all the medicine and being tied down to the IV. Hoping for a quick recovery.

I don't think we have met, but I can relate to your situation. We have a special needs son who is 19 and hospitalized for 9 solid weeks in 2006. He got a rare brain infection from having shunt surgeries. Now he has another infection on his scar and is back in hospital and has to have surgery on Monday. We can keep each other's children in our prayers.

Melodie,

Glad things seem to be progressing in a positive direction. I know you will miss Marc and your boys while they are in FL. Hope you and Logan feel the Father's presence with you all the time. Thank you for the updates.

Your family has been in my thoughts and prayers. I am so sorry that you will not be coming here to Hobe Sound, but hope things improve for Logan over the next few days. If your other boys need a buddy while they are here, I have a 9 year old boy that would enjoy being a friend. Aren't you glad for internet services. Have a good day.

Though grown, I have been through a lot medically with one of my sons. My thoughts, energy, and prayers are with you and I would like to stay in touch in support of what your family is going through. We are all one and there is one thing I can send to help and that is Love... The only real thing in life. Please feel free to email me at ishkiia@ishkiiastudios.com I would love to hear the update on him and keep in touch. Create a great day!
